What is the Hardwood Floor Calculator?

The Hardwood Floor Calculator helps homeowners and flooring installers determine exactly how many cartons of wood, laminate, or vinyl plank flooring to order for a renovation. It calculates total square footage and factors in industry-standard waste percentages to prevent project delays.

How to Calculate Flooring Area and Cartons (Formulas)

Flooring is sold in boxes, not individual planks. You must calculate the exact area and then divide by the coverage area of the specific box you intend to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to add a 10% waste factor?

When you reach the edges of the room, you must cut the hardwood planks to fit. The remaining piece is often too short or cut at the wrong angle to be reused elsewhere, becoming "waste." If you don't order 10% extra upfront, you risk running out of wood. Because dye lots change, buying an extra box a month later may result in mismatched wood colors.

How much extra should I order for a diagonal pattern?

Laying hardwood floors at a 45-degree angle (diagonally) creates a massive amount of off-cut waste at the walls. For diagonal installations, or herringbone patterns, you must increase the waste factor from 10% to at least 15% to 20%.

What is acclimation and why does it matter?

Solid hardwood is a natural, hygroscopic material that expands and contracts with humidity. Before installation, the boxes must be opened and left in the room for 3 to 7 days to "acclimate" to the home's moisture levels. Installing un-acclimated wood will result in the floor buckling, cupping, or pulling apart violently within a few months.
